  • To test module in dizzy. disconnect the wires going to coil. Put an LED test light onto the terminals of the wiring going to the coil. If you get no pulse when someone cranks the engine, i'd say module is cactus in dizzy. If you have pulse, then i'd say the coil is cactus. The TFI module is what tells the coil when to fire the spark.

    The new coils are measuring at between 3 and 4kOhm. I have verified all the wiring and the battery is fully charged. I am not getting a spark and suspect the ICM or the pulse generator is the problem. I am pretty sure I can't test the ICM but would like to know if there is a way to test the pulse generator or which is more likely to fail.

    This ignition coil is a pulse-type transformer. Like other transformers, it consists, in part, of two coils of wire, as shown in the diagram at right. These are both wrapped around the same iron core. Because this is a step-up transformer, the secondary coil has far more turns of wire than the primary coil, which is wrapped around the secondary.

As an afterthought, a shorted coil INPUT might fool a tech into thinking the electronic module is faulty. You would have to provide the output of the module with a dummy test load to prevent that from happening.
